Assistive Technologies
Looking at my placement classroom I have noticed a few AT supports. These would include wobble chairs which allow students who need some extra movement to move around while in class then also on the majority of the chairs, she has bands around the front legs that allow the students to bounce while sitting also. In my different classes throughout life (not sure what time though) I remember having yoga ball seating, and pencil grips but nothing else really that I remember seeing used. Looking at AT supports I find the most helpful would be the seating because it allows me to fidget while in a classroom environment which helps me personally concentrate better.
3D modeling can be used to create tactile teaching aids for students with visual impairments by allowing students to feel the object that is being talked about or being able to follow along with the discussion in a math class with graphs by having models of them that they can use pins to push into the different section of it. The potential benefit of these tools is allowing a more inclusive classroom for visually impaired students to be able to participate in what their classmates are doing without feeling behind.
Looking at the below article some challenges that teachers face with using assistive technology could be the financial challenge of getting the correct AT devices for students and also if the teacher knows how to use these devices. They have to have proper training and not just be expected to know how assistive technology works that a student may be given. Some benefits of AT include making sure the students have accessible time in the classroom to the work that their peers are doing. It also allows for better performance in the classroom academically for students who need these devices but also allows students to feel and become more independent in the work that they need to be doing.
I believe that my role in implementing AT and universal design into my classroom would be knowing how to implement it and what students may need. By being aware of these things, I will be able to recognize what AT devices are and when they may need to be used.
I do not believe that I have tried any Chrome extensions for myself before but I have looked at the dyslexia font before and I was able to read a little faster than I normally would while on my Kindle. Other than this I do not believe I have tried any other extensions.
