SAMR Model
The SAMR Model helps educators make sure that they can use technology in ways that help transform a student's learning experience. Four different levels make it useful for integrating technology into the classroom because it allows different functions of technology that can enhance or transform a student's learning entirely. These Levels are substitution which has no change other than taking one thing away. Next is Augmentation which substitutes one thing but has some improvement that is functional to the student. Modification redesigns what the task would look like, and redefinition allows the students to create ideas for new tasks that would not have been able to be done with any of the other levels.
Looking at a course I have taken while in college one of the learning objectives was "The ability to identify historical periods and cultures based on the styles and items of dress worn at that time or in that culture."
I would design a digital project that aligns with this learning objective using the different levels of the SAMR model as a guide.
Substitution
A digital project that would go along with the learning objective would be taking the physical readings and moving them to a digital format. This would directly substitute the text we had to use that had the information about the different periods and clothing that was being worn. This would enhance the learning process because we would have access to the reading even if we thought we had forgotten our books.
Augmentation
For this class, we did style sheets that helped identify the historical periods. By moving these to Google slides that would be shared with the class it would make this into a collaborative project that allows other students to comment and see the aspects of the period clothing that you found and were able to identify. This would enhance the learning process because we would have been able to see if we had to right periods if we were unsure.
Modification
By making a shared blog or video we would need to do major research over a specific period or item. For this class, we had chosen a topic for our final and by moving this into a blog or video we would have had to do more research and thought into the task because we would have had to redesign the concept from a paper into something that can catch one's eyes. I did my research on the oversexualization of women's undergarments in advertising which would have been interesting to change into this idea of a blog post.
Redefinition
By redefining the learning objective entirely, you can take the idea of historical period clothes and communicate with experts on the topic while writing the blog post. By working with experts and researching and working on a blog post but also adding in the video it will be reworking the original objective completely.
The benefits of using the SAMR model for this project would be being able to get more and more information on these topics of historical period clothes but also on my final project, I had mentioned. It would impact my learning experience and performance by giving me more information that would help me further my understanding of the project. Challenges that the SAMR model brings along with this would be not wanting to do this much research and work into furthering my ideas of the project. For the redefinition section especially, it might be hard to find experts on the topic that are willing to talk about this topic to the depths I would need it to.
